April 7, 2008 - The International Code Council (ICC) and the National Association of Fire Equipment Distributors (NAFED) jointly announced Monday new certifications for fire equipment technicians. The ICC/NAFED Technician Certification Program is the first of the certifications, and a certification for Pre-Engineered Fire Extinguishing Systems Technician will also be offered.
ICC's CEO Rick Weiland said, "The new certifications provide an added level of safety for the public. Earning certification also reflects the professionalism and commitment of Fire Extinguisher Technicians."
The focus of the certification programs is to ensure that fire extinguishers meet ICC standards and are maintained by qualified persons. To ensure that, the groups are partnering on the aforementioned exams and certification, expanding what NAFED already had offered. Person currently certified by NAFED will be recognized with the combined ICC/NAFED endorsement, and the joint program will be in place by July 1, 2008.
