NEW YORK, New York, June 21, 2018 — One component to a blueprint for better cities is constructing better buildings – those that go above and beyond in their core mission. For schools and universities, the core mission is not only to educate students, but also keep them safe and secure. With the goal of constructing robust, resilient and secure educational facilities, ASSA ABLOY has partnered with School Guard Glass to develop complete door openings that comply with the 5-aa10 test standards based on the FBI’s Active Shooter Report. The openings are economically designed using hollow metal door and frame construction with accompanying ASSA ABLOY hardware, that ensure maximum security without sacrificing usability or aesthetics.
To ensure that doors remain secure once closed, the Attack Resistant Openings are rigorously tested to ensure they can withstand an intense four-minute physical attack with the use of hand tools after being shot 60 times with 7.62 NATO rounds. And while the door or glass may not stop a bullet from penetrating the opening, the attack-resistant door assembly will remain intact, preventing an attacker from breaching the opening.
“We share a core mission statement with schools: we want to protect the students, faculty and staff in our communities across the country,” said Ron Baer, Director of Business Development - K-12 at ASSA ABLOY Door Security Solutions. “One of the easiest, quickest, and most economical ways to immediately improve the security of a school is to look at an opening that can withstand and repel a physical assault.”
The Attack Resistant opening, with products from ASSA ABLOY Architectural Door Accessories, Wood Doors, and other Group brands Ceco Door, Curries, and Sargent along with glazing material partner School Guard Glass, thwarts an intruder's attempts to enter a room. When under a physical attack, the opening remains secure long enough for occupants to take cover and first responders to arrive, making it a practical alternative to costly bullet resistant openings. Designed as a life-safety solution for busy public venues such as government buildings, offices, places of worship, and schools, the Attack Resistant opening supports increased requirements to meet U.S. government and military safety and security objectives.
