LAS VEGAS, APRIL 2, 2008 - NoblePeak Vision may be a small company, but it took home the biggest award of the first day of festivities at ISC West 2008.
The 23-person company in Wakefield, Mass., was awarded the SIA New Product Showcase Innovation Award for "Best in Show" for its TriWave Camera Platform, which provides zero lux night vision image sensor technology that enables cameras to literally see in the dark.
"It was a very nice surprise," said Mike Decelle, CEO of NoblePeak. "This is great validation. For a small company like us, independent validation of what we are doing is important."
The camera has the ability to sense the short wave infrared light emitted by the Earth's atmosphere at nighttime. The "night glow" is at a wavelength that standard silicon cameras cannot see. The image generated by the sensor is "very similar to a visible image," Decell added. Day/night cameras equipped with the technology are able to rapidly detect and ID people and objects at night, without active illumination.
"They solved the problem by using germanium instead of silicone," said Shayne Bates, principal of Koffel Associates Inc., and a SIA NPS judge. "You can really call this 'night illumination' – it is truly a breakthrough product."
This year's SIA New Products Showcase featured a record 104 entries. Brivo took home two showcase awards for its OnSite SE access control solution. Other winners included Video IQ, Dedicated Micros and Napco.
"It was difficult to pick a top product out of the record number entrants," said Deborah O'Mara, editor of Security Dealer & Integrator magazine and a judge of the 2008 SIA New Products Showcase. "It's a great marketing tool for manufacturers, and it can make their engineers' day if they win. I think the real value is the ability for dealers and integrators to get a sense of product direction for our industry."
