Company to provide agency with its AT9000 Full Page Readers

St. Paul, Minn. ā€“ December 3, 2012 ā€“ The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has selected 3M to provide Identification Document Verification for VAā€™s Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 Personal Identity Verification (HSPD-12 PIV) System. The 3M solution includes 300 3M AT9000 Full Page Readers and document authentication software deployed at approximately 284 PIV site locations, throughout a range of VA facilities across the United States.

The contract was awarded to 3M Cogent -- a wholly owned subsidiary of 3M and GSA-certified HSPD-12 end-to-end solutions provider -- through a competitive bid process using the GSA IT-70 schedule.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, it required a common, verifiable, and traceable solution deployed to all PIV Registrar sites that complies with the FIPS 201 requirement. HSPD-12 PIV identity proofing with the 3M reader and software helps PIV Registrars ensure that applicants are issued credentials based on electronically validated I-9 documents, and that the resulting data is available for audit and reporting purposes.

ā€œThis is the first HSPD-12 implementation of its type,ā€ said Andrew Dubner, manager with 3M Traffic Safety and Security Systems Divisionā€™s identity management business. ā€œWe are honored to be chosen by VA to provide this solution, which will help contribute to increased integrity of the data stored within the HSPD-12 PIV system.ā€
