A roundup of recent unique security applications and installations

Campus Communication at SELU
Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, La., with a student population of nearly 15,000 and a faculty/staff of nearly 2,000, has upgraded its emergency call boxes across campus with Talk-a-Phone emergency phone units. Joseph Dick, the University’s Network Availability Coordinator, along with Brett Allelo of Graybar Corp., oversaw the replacement of 76 emergency phones and installed the supplier’s Talk-A-Lert software, enabling easy monitoring and testing of the phones.

When an individual uses the phone, they push the call/emergency button to be connected with a campus police dispatcher. A line of continuous communication is opened between both parties, and the phones send their exact location to the police. On top of each phone is an LED blue light that flashes when activated.

DMACC Chooses HD Surveillance
Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) in Iowa has deployed the Avigilon HD surveillance system. The supplier’s Control Center network video management software (NVMS) controls 45 HD cameras ranging to 16MP to monitor high-traffic areas and parking lots at three campuses. The NVMS’ graphic-mapping interface enables security to view footage in real time.

USF Goes For NFC
The University of San Francisco (USF) has rolled out a near field communication (NFC)-enabled campus credential for door access and spending at laundry terminals. The USF solution is comprised of the CS Gold campus card system from CBORD Group and Ingersoll Rand’s aptiQmobile web-based credential services and multi-technology readers.

NFC Project at ASU Recognized
HID Global’s NFC access control pilot with Arizona State University (ASU) has been awarded the Innovative Technology Award by the National Association of Campus Card Users (NACCU).
