LifeDoor, a new technology unveiled at CES, is designed to close interior doors when triggered by a building’s existing smoke detectors. It also notifies users via mobile app, illuminates the room and sounds a secondary alarm. The unit itself mounts to hinges on interior doors, and integrates with existing smoke detectors.
“As a firefighter, I know the importance of having your bedroom door closed when you are sleeping, but in my house, my daughter doesn’t like her door closed; and I like to leave mine open so I can hear if she needs me or if someone is trying to break in,” explains LifeDoor co-founder Joel Sellinger. “The more I thought about this disconnect between our lifestyle and our home safety, the more I wanted to come up with this solution.”
LifeDoor can be installed on any standard residential interior door utilizing the existing hinge. It then automatically closes the door when a connected smoke detector sounds, “buying you not seconds, but minutes to determine how to safely exit the structure,” Sellinger says.
According to the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute, a closed door can mean the difference between 100 degrees and 1,000 degrees in a fire.
