Vivint on Thursday filed a lawsuit in federal court against ADT claiming that the company’s smart home security products infringe upon its patents.
Specifically, Vivint alleges that ADT’s Pulse, Control and Blue security systems feature no less than six patented technologies held by the company. These include:
- United States Patent No. 10,325,159 (the “159 patent”) - Entity detection
- United States Patent No. 10,228,151 (the “151 patent”) - Floating thermostat plate
- United States Patent No. 9,349,262 (the “262 patent”) - Security system providing a localized humanly-perceivable alert for identifying a facility to emergency personnel
- United States Patent No. 7,956,739 (the “739 patent”) - Monitoring and entry system presence service
- United States Patent No. 8,700,769 (the “769 patent”) - System and method for providing configurable security monitoring utilizing an integrated information system
- And, United States Patent No. 8,392,552 (the “’552 patent”) - System and method for providing configurable security monitoring utilizing an integrated information system.
“Vivint invests millions of dollars to develop best-in-class products and services for its customers, as well as to patent and protect this technology. We will vigorously protect and defend our unique intellectual property and innovations,” the company said in a statement announcing the lawsuit.
Vivint claims that it has lost sales due to the infringement of these patents by ADT and is seeking damages and attorney’s fees from the court.
A spokesperson for ADT told SecurityInfoWatch (SIW) on Friday that the company is aware of the lawsuit but did not have a comment on the allegations.
Update: In a statement provided to SIW on 3/4/2021, ADT disputed the claims by Vivint and said it plans to defend itself against the allegations. Here is the statement in its entirety.
"On Feb. 25, 2021, Vivint, Inc. filed a complaint against ADT Inc. in the United States District Court for the District of Utah, Central Division, claiming that ADT has infringed certain of Vivint’s patents. ADT believes the claims asserted by Vivint are completely without merit and intends to vigorously defend against the lawsuit."
