LENEXA, Kan., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ICOP Digital, Inc.
(Nasdaq: ICOP), an industry-leading company engaged in advancing digital
surveillance solutions, today announced its formal support of the Florida
Technology Fund Bill, representing pending legislation in the State of Florida
that provides for a
The proposed legislation comprises two linked bills, HB 155 - Police Technology Fee and HB 157 - Police Technology Trust Fund. Originally envisioned by Chief Ed Nathanson , Chief of Police, Lady Lake Police Department, the bills have been sponsored in the State House by Representative Hugh H. Gibson, III (R) and are expected to go to the floor in March. If passed by the House and Florida Senate and signed by the Governor, the Bills will become effective on October 1, 2008 .
"This legislation represents a win-win for everyone, except, of course, for those convicted - and rightly so. It seems only fair and logical that convicted offenders, not just tax payers, help pay for crime-fighting technology that can materially enhance the impact and effectiveness of local law enforcement. Moreover, we have proven in our county that police use of technology, such as digital in-car video, subsequently aids our prosecutors in achieving rapid convictions in court, thus saving even more tax payer dollars," stated Nathanson. "As a customer of ICOP Digital and as an enthusiastic advocate for empowering officers with leading edge technology such as the ICOP Model 20/20(R)-W, I am especially pleased to see that ICOP is taking the lead in helping us to win statewide support for this important legislation."
Dave Owen , Chairman and CEO of ICOP, stated, "Chief Nathanson's concept is smart and innovative. Aside from serving as a potentially significant source of new funding for local law enforcement agencies, it would also incentivize and reward those agencies and prosecutors who are diligent when cracking down on DUI and drug-related offenses in their communities."
"We'd like to welcome other technology leaders to join us in support of this important legislation, while also advocating other states to follow Florida's example and implement similar programs to support law enforcement," noted Owen.
