A Tough Olympics Ahead?

July 26, 2024
The prospect of protecting venues all over the metropolis and also preventing cyber crime has security stakeholders very nervous.

The 2024 Paris Olympics officially get under way today with the promise of more than 15 million visitors flocking to France. Paris is, of course, steeped in history, culture and beauty – but it’s also an open city.

Protests and violence are nothing new to the Olympic games, whether it’s the massacre during the Munich Olympics or the bombing in Centennial Park in Atlanta. France has a history of enduring brutal terrorist incidents, and the Hamas-Israeli war and Russian invasion of Ukraine have heightened the threat.

Security challenges are already starting to occur: arson attacks overnight damaged France’s high-speed rail system, which could affect hundreds of thousands of visitors to the game.

Cyber crime is another huge threat to the games, as bad actors are already at work perpetuating fraud, theft, confusion and chaos to discredit the games.

All of this has prompted the largest mobilization of the military in Paris since World War II, and scores of cybersecurity teams and experts are working to identify and prevent crippling attacks.

SecurityInfoWatch delved deeper into the nature of the threats and unprecedented security operations that have taken shape in a two-article series published this week. Click here to check out the articles – and join us in praying for a safe and memorable Olympic games.
