FBI agents and heavily armed agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been seen outside the Northside Hospital Midtown medical office building, where an active shooter situation is unfolded Wednesday.
Atlanta police have confirmed five people were shot, and one person was killed. The shooter remains at large. Police lifted the shelter-in-place advisory amid the active shooter investigation in Midtown.
Police said they made the decision after receiving information that the suspect was no longer in the area. A Crime Stoppers reward has also been increased to $10,000 for information about the suspect in this case.
As the incident unfolded, an officer with a “negotiator” patch was seen entering the medical center. A registered nurse from the Fulton County Police Department was also seen there, wearing a helmet and full SWAT gear.
MARTA police, the Georgia State Patrol, Fulton County marshals and South Fulton police were also at the scene, as well as several SWAT units. Atlanta police remain the lead agency at this point, according to the FBI, which has offered assistance as necessary.
Atlanta Public Schools issued a statement on social media saying schools that were on lockdown will be dismissed. Officers have been placed at schools, the district said.
Northside Hospital said it is cooperating with local law enforcement following the shooting at its Midtown Atlanta location.
In a statement, the hospital urged people in the area to shelter in place and follow instructions from local authorities.
“This tragedy is affecting all of us, and we ask for patience and prayers at this time,” the statement added.
MARTA police said they have deployed tactical and special response officers to assist Atlanta police during the investigation.
