SIW Radio, Episode 53: DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano discusses stadium security
This week's program is brought to you live from New Orleans, La., where the University of Southern Mississippi's National Center for Spectator Sports Safety & Security is hosting its annual conference, organized by Dr. Lou Marciani. On today, Aug. 2, 2010, this first day of the conference, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano addressed the attendees of the NCS4 conference to speak about the role of DHS in the security of our nation's sports venues. In this address she also provides an update on the efforts to mitigate and control the Deep Water Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Secretary Napolitano is introduced by Todd Keil, assistant secretary for infrastructure protection with DHS.
The core messaging from Secretary Napolitano is about the need to expand public-private partnerships between DHS, law enforcement and stadium and sporting organization operators, and as part of that partnership, she called for the sports industry to adopt and champion the "See something, Say something" public security awareness campaign the DHS has recently become engaged in.
