San Louis Obispo County Hydro Plant Gets Additional Perimeter Security

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- A security fence is going up around Nacimiento Dam in an effort to thwart terrorists who might target the San Luis Obispo County hydroelectric plant.
The $110,000 fence is being built as a result of a security analysis required by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the Monterey County Water Resources Agency said.
A fence was recommended to secure the hydroelectric plant and the water agency authorized the project in May.
Curtis Weeks, the agency's general manager, said the fence will serve as a deterrent.
The agency tried but failed to get Office of Homeland Security money to pay for the fence, and there wasn't enough money in the water agency's budget to pay for it.
But this year, Weeks said, the agency received a windfall from its hydroelectric plant and officials are using some of that money to build the fence.
