Newark Airport security firm to be replaced following fraud charges
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has terninated the contract of FJC Security Services as a result of a high-profile identity fraud incident involving one of its supervisors that was discovered in May.
The agency announced Wednesday FJC's contract will expire on Sept. 1 and AlliedBarton will assume the contract earning more than $221 million over four years to deploy 600 guards at Newark Liberty, La Guardia and JFK airports.
The lost contract will cost FJC two multiyear contracts worth a total of $550 million — $93 million this year alone, according to the New York Post.
PA officials told The Post they have been troubled by a long list of security foul-ups by FJC, capped by May arrest of Peter “Bimbo” Oyewole, who used the identity of a homicide victim to land his sensitive job and pass repeated background checks.
“Recent serious lapses are unacceptable,” said PA Executive Director Pat Foye told The Post. “The entire security function at the PA is under review, including our current private security vendor.”
FJC had done work for the Port Authority since 2003 and employs roughly 1,000 people throughout the PA’s system, which includes the region’s airports, the Hudson River crossings, the World Trade Center and the PATH train line.
Port Authority Executive Director Pat Foye said FJC will continue to provide security at other locations such as bridges and tunnels, but added that the agency would seek new contractors.
