About Spectral Edge
Spectral Edge was spun out of University of East Anglia’s Colour Lab back in 2014, having secured seed capital to develop Spectral Edge’s algorithms and begin work to commercialise the offering. The company was established in Cambridge to maximise access to further capital, world-class engineering talent and the technology ecosystem prevalent there.
Spectral Edge initially worked in the world of broadcast television to support colour blind viewers to help them view the difference between colours (say red or black or green and blue) on-screen.
A modified version of this technology was licensed by Sky Italia to improve perceptual detail for HDTV viewing while using encoding to reduce bit rate to 12 Mbps, thereby enabling three channels per 36MHz satellite transponder with improved perceptual image quality. As a result of this licensing arrangement with Sky Italia some 55 satellite channels in Italy use Spectral Edge technology today. Spectral Edge recently secured a third round of $5.3m funding to accelerate its R&D work as the company fine-tuned its focus on the surveillance camera market.
