Santa Fe, N.M., Office Park Gets Go Ahead

Oct. 20, 2004

District Court Judge James Hall ruled in a written opinion issued Monday in favor of the Thornburg Cos. plan to build a new office park on about 15 acres in Santa Fe's northwest corner.

Hall's eight-page written opinion rejects the Concerned Residents of Santa Fe North's effort to stop Thornburg's $15 million construction project near the intersection of N.M. 599 and U.S. 84/285.

Hall's opinion also upholds the Santa Fe Planning Commission's approval of Thornburg's plan as legally reasonable and "supported by substantial evidence."

One issue in the legal fight was whether Thornburg's office plan was in compliance with a master plan and "vision statement" for the Santa Fe Estates' "Village Center." The vision statement called for "small scale neighborhood commercial district," without big-box retailers but including such businesses as "financial services."

The residents fighting the Thornburg plan said it was out of scale with what was supposed to occur under the vision statement.
