According to IMS Research senior analyst Gary Wong, the top five companies providing video management software in the Americas (based on revenues for 2011, the most recent data set available) are the following:
1. Genetec
2. OnSSI
3. Milestone Systems
4. Verint Systems
5. NICE Systems
Video management software (VMS) is typically used to record and manage video surveillance installations. The "video management software" section of data is distinct from solutions which package both the hardware and software together (e.g., full NVRs). All of the firms in the top 5 listing above offer a wide range of VMS solutions, scaling from small security camera installations to large, enterprise-wide solutions. The firms are notable for their ability to interface with a broad variety of video surveillance cameras, and are typically delivered through specialized security systems integrators adept at building robust video surveillance systems.

IPVM.com's John Honovich said Genetec's recent rise to the top of the VMS market in the Americas linked up with the firm's use for some very large projects, but he noted that the "software only" focus of the rankings does not give consideration to some hardware/appliance-focused VMS firms.
"OnSSI is getting squeezed by Milestone's growth in the U.S.," Honovich said, noting that Milestone is the original manufacturer of some components of OnSSI's solution. "Genetec is doing well in ultra large projects. Exacq and Avigilon are missing from this list because they sell a mix of appliances and software only [thus] skewing the results."Â
